UN chief issues severe warning about Israel’s recent strikes, ground operations in Deir al-Balah, Gaza

(MENAFN) The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, issued a severe warning on Tuesday about Israel’s recent strikes and ground operations in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, highlighting that new displacement orders and attacks are intensifying an already dire humanitarian situation. He expressed deep concern over the Israeli military actions, particularly in areas crowded with civilians and humanitarian facilities.

Turk stated that the ongoing airstrikes and ground operations will inevitably cause more civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure. Given the dense civilian presence and Israel’s current methods of warfare, the risk of unlawful killings and serious violations of international humanitarian law is extremely high.

The targeted area hosts numerous humanitarian organizations, including medical clinics, shelters, warehouses, and community kitchens. Many homes have been destroyed, forcing thousands to flee once again into overcrowded parts of Gaza where aid is severely restricted.

Turk reminded Israel that forcibly displacing people under its occupation constitutes unlawful transfer, which is a war crime and potentially a crime against humanity. As the occupying power, Israel is legally required to ensure that civilians receive essential supplies like food and medical aid, and humanitarian access must be immediate and unconditional.

He called for an immediate halt to the killings, destruction, and large-scale violations of international law, noting that growing global voices demand an end to the ongoing nightmare in Gaza.
