UN Chief Holds Phone Talks with Venezuela’s Maduro
"The Secretary-General has received a phone call from H.E. Nicolas Maduro Moros, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, regarding the current tensions in the region," a statement from Guterres' office confirmed.
The statement emphasized that "during the call, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations' position on the need for Member States to respect international law, particularly the United Nations Charter," while Guterres stressed the imperative to "exert restraint and de-escalate tensions to preserve regional stability."
UN spokesperson Farhan Haq earlier indicated Guterres "calls for restraint and for the immediate de-escalation of the situation."
The diplomatic contact followed US President Donald Trump's Monday announcement ordering comprehensive interdiction of sanctioned vessels accessing the South American nation, coinciding with intensified American military deployments along Venezuela's northern Caribbean Sea coastline.
Caracas condemned the action as "grotesque," charging Trump with attempting resource seizure. Official government communications alleged Trump "assumes that Venezuela's oil, land, and mineral wealth are his property."
US forces have sustained substantial and expanding military operations throughout the Caribbean over the preceding four months, executing strikes against vessels allegedly involved in narcotics transportation. Trump has additionally signaled potential US military ground operations on Venezuelan territory.
The confrontation intensified when American forces captured a sanctioned petroleum tanker near Venezuelan waters December 10, an operation Caracas characterized as "international piracy."
