UN Report Reveals Foiled Plots Against Syrian Leadership
The information appeared in the 22nd report issued by the secretary-general concerning the risks ISIS poses to global peace and stability. The document was compiled in cooperation with the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, a media outlet reported on Wednesday.
The assessment identified Al-Sharaa as a primary objective, in addition to Interior Minister Anas Khattab and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
According to the report, two assassination schemes targeting the president were executed in the cities of Aleppo and Daraa by Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah. Although the organization is not formally designated by the UN, it is believed to function as a proxy for ISIS.
This structure allowed the faction to maintain plausible deniability while simultaneously strengthening its operational capabilities.
The report emphasized that, despite ongoing counterterrorism campaigns, Syria’s security landscape continues to be unstable. ISIS cells remain active throughout various regions of the country.
Operations were largely aimed at security personnel, especially in northern and northeastern areas, including one assault directed at coalition forces jointly led by Syria and the US.
Additionally, ISIS attempted to escalate sectarian discord in an effort to undermine state institutions, including by coordinating attacks on places of worship, the report stated.
