UAE Calls on UN to Take Action to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
In a letter dated Tuesday to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council president, Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab stressed that the Council must act “immediately” to ensure safe navigation in and around the strategically vital waterway.
The UAE specifically cited Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which allows the council to respond to threats to international peace with actions ranging from economic sanctions to the use of armed force.
The strait has been largely disrupted since early March, following Iran’s efforts to restrict access in response to the US-Israeli offensive launched on February 28. Normally, around 20 million barrels of oil—about 20% of the world’s daily supply—pass through the strait, and the ongoing disruption has driven up oil prices, disrupted shipping, and raised concerns about lasting economic consequences.
The US and Israel have carried out airstrikes in Iran since late February, resulting in over 1,340 fatalities, including the country’s then-Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
